Tournament Preview: Houston Open

Houston Open: Memorial Park Golf Course

After a pretty crazy tournament in the Mayakoba Open, we follow it up with the Houston Open with a relatively average board. Viktor Hovland pulled off his second win in a row at Mayakoba (hope you all followed along on the live bet) and we got a nice +200 winner with Serg finishing 7th on our Top 20 bet. It was good to see Hovland get another win under his belt and he definitely looked dangerous coming out of the gate for the start of the season.

Now let’s get into the breakdown for this week. Starting with last year’s results we have the below Top 10:

Ortiz earned his first and only win here last year and used this to catapult himself into a strong year in 2020. He went to North Texas so clearly has some experience down there combined with finishing top five the year prior. Koepka and Poulter also assisted in the renovation of this course a couple years ago so they’re a couple guys that I think are worth watching out for coming into Thursday.

Now let’s get into the betting odds for this week:

Some solid value this week and after hitting that Hovland live bet I’m feeling a little lucky going in so let’s take a couple shots.

Winner: Taylor Gooch +3000

Love Gooch in this spot. He’s placed top 5 each of the last two years and almost had a top 10 last week. We’re not big on hedging here but if that’s your game I think you could definitely get yourself a nice cash out going into Saturday or Sunday.

Winner: Carlos Ortiz +3400

I just can’t let this slip by without throwing something down on this guy. Won last year, top five the year before and second place finish last week. I get this course plays to the long drivers and he doesn’t hit too many bombs but I don’t see how he doesn’t at least give this a run. Also, coming off Hovland defending his belt last week will have to throw something on him to take this home. Value play would be Top 5 +600 and might be able to thread the needle with that and a winner cash out.

Top 10: Brooks Koepka +275

As I mentioned earlier, Brooks helped in renovating the course a couple years ago and even though he got cut last week he has proven to be successful at this course. With the short rough and Brooks’ length this definitely plays to his strong suits. He could go out and win this thing but I think top 10 is a safe bet with his below average play last week.

Mortal Lock: Scottie Scheffler Top 10 +180

Billy absolutely fucked us on the mortal lock last week after sticking around the top 5 Thursday and Friday, so we need a nice rebound this week. Scottie is a Texas boy and has always performed in any Texas tourneys. Scottie has never gotten a solo win but after playing so well in the Ryder Cup and last week, I think he will sneak into the top 10 if not top 5 for some nice value. Would have expected this to be minus money so have to make this the play of the week.
