How to Bet: Waste Management Open

NEW LOGO ANNOUNCEMENT

After a lot of work over the last couple of weeks, it’s time to finally unveil TPB’s new logo. It’s something I’ve wanted to change since starting this project, and now that the fanbase has increased I think it’s the perfect time for something new. See below and, of course, comment what you think!

Gambling Recap

Last week was an interesting one.. We took Streelman to win and after day one things were looking pretty damn good. Then, on Friday, he decided to jump off the biggest cliff possible and destroy any hopes of winning. The cuck found a way to get cut after starting -4 and that was it for all of us. We absolutely CRUSHED the mortal lock on Troy Merritt Top 20, though, as he even gave himself a chance to win before blowing up on 17. Overall we finished up one unit, since the mortal lock gave us four back. It was our first positive day in a while — which tells each and every one of us that this could be the start of something beautiful.

Last Week

Pebble Beach always seems to provide an incredible experience for both us die-hards watching and the competing field. The highlight of the week was obviously our guy Jordan Spieth coming back from 11 strokes off the lead to almost stealing the win, before Tom Hoge came in for the kill. I do have to admit that I placed a large live wager on Spieth before Sunday which put me one step away from a mental breakdown. How does Jordan Spieth, the king of the PGA, blow a two stroke lead with three holes to go??? Not to mention, to fucking Tom Hoge??? Yes, I’m still upset about it. Yes, I was planned on showing off the screenshots after winning. Yes, I think that was why I lost – I WILL be better this week… But for fucks sake Jordan finish the fucking tournament. He hit one of the most spectacular shots ever seen on Saturday where he was leaning over a 60 foot cliff and managed to save par.

He came out slow and methodical on Sunday, then started drilling putts and everything was shaping up to be a vintage Spieth win — until Hoge threw an absolute dart on 16 that was about two inches from going in for eagle. That seemed to invoke a little shakiness in Spieth, as he sent his par 3 tee shot into a bunker then missed a five foot putt for par. Spieth went on to par 18 as Hoge birdied 17 to secure the win. The back nine on Sunday was exhilarating to watch as it was anyone’s tournament to win, until Hoge went over and above to prove he’s the real deal – earning him his first PGA win.

Recap of Last Year

Last year, Brooks Koepka pulled off a huge comeback victory for his first win in almost two years and his second overall win at the Waste Management. Spieth gave himself plenty of chances to win the tournament, but didn’t seem to bring his A-game on Sunday and started to falling off. James Hahn looked like he could secure the win for a while as well, but eventually crashed and burned with Koepka chasing him down. Brooks hit an incredible chip in for eagle on 17, basically sealing his eighth win on tour.

Odds for the Weekend

A very solid field for one of my favorite tournaments of the year. Most of the biggest stars are coming out this week and it should, as always, be a great tournament to watch. Rahm, per usual, opens as the favorite as he has constantly been in the running for each tournament lately and has always performed well here. A few things that stick out below:

  • Despite being a heavy favorite the last few weeks, Cantlay is +1400 (+1600 on DK)
    • He’s started very well the last few weeks, but typically falls off during the weekend
  • Koepka hasn’t been playing great, but he has won this tournament twice.. so +3200 looks pretty high to me
  • Rickie Fowler. I can’t believe I’m doing this to myself again but I can’t help it. Rickie has been so good here, including a win. +7000 (+8000 on DK) is so outlandishly high there’s no way I don’t throw a few dollars on it
  • Berger is super appealing here as he’s been playing pretty well, but it’s a bit difficult to trust his injury progress if he had to sit out last week

THE PICKS

To win: Scottie Scheffler +2400

Scottie has been playing very well over the last few weeks. He’s had a 2nd place finish at the Hero World Challenge as well as some top 10’s and 25’s over the last few weeks. I think the Waste Management Open is a great place to get your first win and I really like this for Scottie. The course fits his game and I foresee the place exploding when he throws a dart on 16 every day.

Matchup of the Week: Koepka Over Ancer +100

Not sure why Ancer is the favorite here. He’s been playing like shit AND the last time he played here (in 2019) he got cut. I think Brooks could definitely get a top 10 here, and I’m not sure Ancer will even make the cut.

Fuck this Guy: Harold Varner to Miss the Cut +210

I really like HV3, he seems like a really good dude and is very good for golf. Last week, he pulled off an insane win in the Saudi International but I think he might have celebrated a bit too much. He should be coming off some jet lag, brutal hangovers and just too big of an adrenaline rush to do much of anything this week.

Mortal Lock: Keith Mitchell Top 20 +240

Keith ranks 7th in stokes off the tee and has been playing very well over the last few weeks. He had a big chance to get into the top 5 last week, but struggled with his putter as the tournament progressed. He still finished in 12th place and I don’t see a reason why he can’t do something like that again. +240 is wayyyy overpriced for top 20 and I see this being as easy as our Troy Merritt win last week.

Longshots and Props:

Matt Fitzpatrick Hole in One +6500 – he hit one yesterday, why not one more?

Rickie Fowler to Win +8000 – I apologize in advance

Pat Perez to Win +10,000 – Lives in Arizona, has been playing very well, take the cashout if it’s there late Saturday/Sunday
