How to Bet: The Memorial Tournament

LIV Golf Has Arrived

So for all of you that follow the golf world, there’s a whole lot of shit going down. We have The Match VI tonight, the Memorial Tournament starting tomorrow and best of all, LIV Golf just dropped their nuts on the golf world. Now you all know that I’ve sided with LIV Golf this entire time and have been actively pursuing to become their full time media coverage but even I didn’t expect this. Dustin Johnson has signed a contract to participate in all LIV Golf events for $125 Million. The first tournament will take place next week and I can’t wait to see who else will be participating. Also, will say this again, to all my LIV Golf representatives reading this, I don’t want to work my desk job anymore, please pay me to cover your tournaments.

Recap of Last Week

Last week, the Charles Schwab Invitational delivered an extremely exciting tournament for Memorial Day Weekend. It looked like it was going to be Scottie all weekend as he was in the hunt then in the lead heading into Sunday but suddenly the number one player in the world forgot how to score. Meanwhile, our mortal lock Sam Burns was lighting the course up and shot 5 under to give himself a shot to win. Ultimately, Burns ended up in a playoff and hit an absolute nuke from the fringe to win the tournament. Shown below:

A really exciting tournament and for the first time in a while we saw that Scottie Scheffler might be human. We had a strong week in gambling hitting both our missed cut bet and mortal lock. I am painfully disappointed that I talked myself out of using Burns as my winner and only using him as my lock but I guess it is what is. Let’s go find our winner of the Memorial.

Recap of Last Year

Last year was one of the more memorable tournaments of the year but not necessarily because of golf. Jon Rahm had a five stroke lead after finishing his Saturday round when the PGA officials decided to let him know he had covid and needed to immediately withdraw.

Video below:

It was the first and only huge effect that covid had on a tournament, as all others were really pre-tournament withdrawals. The golf world went into uproar as they completely stole the win from the Spaniard. That being said, someone still needed to win and Cantlay was ready to take the spot. Cantlay beat out Morikawa in a playoff and this really turned up the heat on his spectacular season, leading to the Tour Championship.

The Course

Muirfield Village is one of the best courses on tour. As we all know, it is the course that Jack built and it has become his baby. Two years ago, Jack decided to tear up the entire golf course and completely rebuilt it. The breakdown is below and is a really fun video to gain an inside look on all of Jack’s renovations.

Odds for the Weekend

Solid board this week as most of the top players in the world use this to compete for the US Open. With the way that the course plays with distance, strategy and rough, it is the best preparation they can get for the third major of the year.

What I’m looking at:

  • Jon Rahm opens as our favorite at +1000
    • He is basically the back-to-back champ and could easily win this but I think we’re looking for a little more value here
  • Xander comes in at +1700 with the third lowest odds. He has performed very well here each year and is still looking for his first win of the year
    • He kind of fucked us at the PGA so I’m good on him
  • Hideki has won the Memorial before and he’s had some other strong performances but since Jack has been messing with the course he has very much underperformed
    • I think with his potential injuries and sloppy play his last two times here, it’s best to stay away

THE PICKS

Winner – Patrick Reed +6000

That’s right motherfuckers, Sandy Reed is about to flop his nuts on this course and make Jack Nicklaus hand him the trophy. I have no proof of it but I feel like Jack absolutely hates Sandy Reed so this would be incredible. He has played extremely well at this course especially since renovations, getting a 10th place and 5th place finish the last two tournaments. Last week he showed some promise as well and is finally looking healthy after a top 10. +6000 (on Draftkings) is insane value and you should lock this in while you can.

Longshot – Matt Kuchar +7500

Kuch has been showing he still has it over the last few weeks between the Byron Nelson and PGA. He has made the cut the last two tournaments and I think he can actually make a run at this thing. He has a lot of experience at this course and I think that at the very least we can expect a hot start from him and will have a chance going into the weekend.

Fuck this Guy – Cameron Tringale to Get Cut +200

I’m not sure what it is about Tringale but something about this guy just screams he’s about to get cut. When the big tournaments come, he’s nowhere to be found and when play gets difficult the only time you hear about him is how below the cut line he is. Maybe I just don’t like him that much but I think this will be easy.

MORTAL LOCK: Max Homa Top 20 +170

Max Homa has become one of the most widely disrespected players on the PGA Tour. The guy wins tournaments all the time at this point and is in constant contention, yet the oddsmakers act like he’s still the same guy he was his first year. His name is constantly floating around Twitter and the leaderboards and he’s a fan favorite and still feeds off of that pressure. Max has the experience at Muirfield and top 20 here for him seems way too easy and he could even make a run at this thing.
